organization of the army
The Congress thought it was a brilliant idea to let Washington lead the Continental Army because Washington was an experienced leader from the French and Indian Wars. Since the Continental Army is poorly trained, fighting the powerful British right away wouldn’t be such a good idea. So Washington had to organize a way to help this Army defeat and conquer the British.
“Washington organized this seemingly motley amalgamation into three divisions, six brigades, and thirty-eight regiments. He initially employed one state's militia - Major General Philip Schuyler's ten regiments in New York - in an unsuccessful attempt to invade Canada. When it became clear that the Crown wanted to crush independence, Congress lengthened enlistment terms and ordered States to contribute regiments in proportion to their population.”

Washington did have some victories and defeats going through the process. For example he managed to get the British out of Boston in 1776. The Continental Army did manage to succeed their independence for America with the victory in 1781 at Yorktown. All of this was done by Washington and his leading strategies of getting victories.
